Cosori Juni Review: A Better Way to Make Pour-Over Coffee?

Promising automated precision pour over coffee and superior drip brew, the Cosori Juni is a direct shot at the much-loved Fellow Aiden and xBloom Studio. Trying to be the best of both for a lot less money. And the hype for it is NUTS. Gushing reviews have been dropping for months ahead of its launch, and they asked if they could send us a machine to test. We agreed only on the basis that they’d have no input on our Cosori Juni Review – if we hated it, we would tell you (tldr we didn’t; it’s amazing).

The Cosori Juni is a very impressive coffee machine. It looks good, we found it really simple to use, and even if you’ve never made pour over before, you can get a good cup of coffee from it. The really impressive stuff happens in the app: precision temperature control, multiple pour stages customized to your exact specs, and an AI recipe builder.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s not as good as someone with lots of pour over experience. It’s also built entirely from plastic and has lots of parts, increasing the chances of something breaking. But if you’re looking for something to automatically produce high-quality pour over (or brew an excellent carafe of drip), then the Cosori Juni is a brilliant coffee maker.

We were gifted the machine on the condition that we could write whatever we wanted. This shows real confidence from Cosori in their product. We’ve been deep into the pour over weeds over the last month to separate Juni’s marketing hype from our first-hand experience:

At a Glance: Cosori Juni Review

Verdict: The Cosori Juni delivers on its promise. Using the app, you can create precise pour over recipes for your ideal cup at the touch of a button. Adjust temperature, flow rate, pouring pattern, and pause duration; agitate the grounds before and after each pour – it gives you everything you need for truly great-tasting coffee.

The main drawbacks are that all these settings can be quite overwhelming for beginners, you have to use the app to get the most from the machine, you need a separate grinder, and it’s quite tall.

Bottom line: If you’re a speciality coffee lover who either doesn’t want to learn to manually make pour over or would rather have it done for you while you get on with other things, the Cosori Juni is fantastic. As long as you are happy to play with the app, it’s a no-brainer for us.

Who It’s For (And Who It’s Not!)

✅ Buy the Cosori Juni if:

  • You love pour over. The Juni excels at delivering the bright, clean flavors of pour over coffee as consistently and easily as possible – once you’ve found/ created your ideal recipe, you can save it in the app or on the machine.
  • You like to get into the fine details of coffee brewing. The app’s “Barista Mode” gives you full control: volume, pouring pattern, water temperature, flow rate, wait time, and even grounds bed agitation settings are all customizable.
  • Convenience is a priority. Once your recipe is set, just add a filter and ground coffee, press a button, and off it goes. No extra input required. It takes pour over from being a treat on slow Sunday mornings to being possible even on the busiest mornings.
  • You want to get into pour over but don’t want to spend the time mastering it. Recipe creation is easy, even if you’re a total newbie. You can tell the app what beans you’re using and give it feedback until the brewed coffee is perfect for you. You don’t need any prior knowledge to get a great pour over from the Juni.

❌ Skip it if:

  • You’re a fan of traditional drip coffee. The Juni is designed to produce the lighter, sweeter, and more nuanced flavors of pour over coffee rather than the bolder brew of a traditional drip machine. If classic bold drip brews are your preference, you can get a great machine for 1/2 the price of the Juni.
  • You’re not going to grind fresh. Of course you can use pre-ground coffee in the Juni, but you’ll be missing out on so much great flavor. Freshly ground coffee is a must to get those subtle flavor notes.
  • You don’t like plastic in your coffee maker. The Juni is entirely plastic. If that sort of thing isn’t for you then give it a miss.
  • You don’t want to use an app. While you can just use the standard settings on the Juni, you really need the app to get a great result that’s customized to your beans and preferences. It’s not worth it if you stick to the standard settings.

Key Features

1. Customizable Pour Over Recipes in VeSync App

The Juni comes with 5 preset recipes in the app: SCA Golden Cup, Classic Brew, Clean Cup, Africa or America Origin Beans, and Asia Origin Beans. It also allows you to create your own recipes, which is where the magic really starts to happen.

Choose the number of pours, the volume of each, the temperature of the water (176-205°F), the flow rate (2.5-4ml/s), pause duration (0-60s), whether the pour pattern is spiral, circular, or centered, and if the grounds should be agitated before, after, or both. So a whole lot of settings that will be consistent.

After brewing, you can also give your feedback on whether you liked the cup of coffee brewed or if you thought it needed some improvement. It uses AI to update the recipe… though anytime we’ve given it feedback, nothing has changed.

Hand holding phone in front of the Cosori Juni, the VeSync app is open on 'Juicy Fruit Burst' coffee recipe

2. Pre-Wet Feature

Wetting the filter to remove the paper taste and reduce channeling (water bypassing the coffee grounds entirely) is key to a great pour over. The Juni has a button just for pre-wetting the filter before brewing. (Don’t forget to throw out the water from the bottom of your cup/carafe before you start actually making your coffee, though!)

3. Cone or Flat-Bottomed Basket

The Juni comes with a cone filter for 1-2 cups and a flat-bottomed basket for larger batch brews. It detects which basket you’ve inserted, so you can’t put the wrong basket in for your favorite brew method.

In the box, you get 20 filters for each basket type.

4. Brew from 1 cup to 50oz of Coffee

I enjoy the flexibility to brew a single cup for just myself to enjoy, or a full 50 oz (1.5L) carafe for the whole family to share. Or literally any amount of coffee you need in between those two extremes.

5. Three Favorite Recipes

Once you’ve created your favorite recipes on the app, you can save 3 straight onto the Juni coffee machine so you don’t need to have your phone on hand if, like me, you’re prone to putting things down and instantly losing them.

Finger pressing the 'Favorite' button on the Cosori Juni's touchscreen with a big '2' displayed on the screen to indicate which recipe has been selected

6. Scheduled Brewing

There’s the option to schedule a brew to be ready whenever you are. To do this, you use the app to set when you want your coffee to be ready and prep the grounds beforehand. But I don’t really know when this would be useful, as the best flavor will be from using freshly ground coffee and pre-wetting the paper filter. Both of which involve you standing in front of the machine just before brewing.

Maybe if you want it to brew whilst you’re in the shower and be ready when you get out..? I wouldn’t be setting it up to brew the following morning, though.

Is the Cosori Juni Easy to Use?

Easy to use, difficult to master is probably the best way to describe the Cosori Juni.

The Juni is trying to remove the learning curve (and inconsistency) from pour over regardless of how much experience you have.

Straight out of the box, you can use the machine’s touchscreen to select one of 3 roast levels, 3 strength levels, and whether you want to brew 1-6 cups. It then tells you how much coffee to add, using the provided scoop as a unit of measurement, and off it goes. Remember to pre-wet your filter before brewing and discard that water.

(Side note: “scoops” is an imprecise unit of measurement, so we find it odd that Cosori uses this. Instead, we recommend weighing your coffee.)

So you can get a coffee from it very easily. Will that coffee taste like $300 well-spent? Probably not. It’s fine, but you could spend $100 to get a carafe of coffee that’s just “fine”.

What takes this machine to the next level is the app and the customization that it offers.

In “old man yells at cloud” vibe, I miss a simpler time when we didn’t need an app for everything. That aside, connecting the VeSync app to the Juni is very easy (it connects via WiFi) and takes like 30 seconds. Then you can choose one of the 5 preset recipes as a starting point. We tested with Ethiopian beans, so we picked their “Africa or American Origin Beans” preset, and off it went. The result was much, much better than the machine’s settings. We’re getting close to being worth the money now.

What tipped the scale into exceptional was customizing the recipe to our tastes. There are a few options for this. You can start from scratch in “Barista mode” – we’d only recommend this to people very familiar with pour over who want to recreate their manual process. For everyone else, you can edit any pre-made recipe by providing your feedback on what you did or didn’t like about the brewed coffee, or manually overriding a setting if you know what you want changed.

AI Recipe Generation

In the app’s AI mode, you can get it to generate a recipe for you (no, not even your coffee is safe from AI). You need to tell it some information about the beans you’re using – roast level, origin, roast date – which you can do manually or by scanning the bag. Then decide the flavor profile, ratio (strength), and volume of coffee you want to make.

Once you’ve run the recipe, you can give it feedback, and the AI will adjust it for next time. The feedback is simple: sliders for acidity, bitterness, sweetness, and body.

This kind of worked for us, but not the standout feature we thought it might be. It took a lot of back and forth before it created something we were quite happy with, like 8 brews. At first it was a little weak and bitter, lacking sweetness. It didn’t manage to change that on the second try. The third try was an overcorrection. And so on, but we got there.

It seemed to struggle to adjust when things were just slightly off. However, this is still in Beta and very new – it will probably get better as more people use it and it has more data to pull from. We will report back in a few months. As it stands, using AI Mode will get you a very good pour over, if not an exceptional one.

How Good is the Coffee?

The sky is basically the limit with the Juni, though it’s not replacing a professional just yet.

After playing with the app and fine-tuning our pour over recipe, we got spectacular results from the light-roast Ethiopian beans we were testing with. Bright, fresh fruit notes with delicate tea-like undertones and fantastic acidity. Incredible floral aroma too, exactly what you’d expect from a high-quality pour over coffee.

The on-machine settings won’t produce something this good, though, and whilst the AI-generated recipe got kinda close, it couldn’t produce this either.

We had to rely on our own experience and knowledge to get the best results, which isn’t ideal if you’re a newbie. However, the app also has a “Recipe Plaza” where users can share recipes for specific bean types, extraction styles, and flavor profiles. As more people own the Juni, there’ll be a mountain of recipes to choose from. This could be great to help you find your style… or it could be overwhelming. But it’s another option for getting awesome coffee.

We preferred the flavor from using the cone-shaped filter basket – the result was noticeably brighter and had more clarity, similar to using a Hario V60-style dripper. This is purely personal preference and dictated by how much coffee you’re brewing. Anything more than 2 cups, and you automatically need to use the flat-bottomed basket, which brews a fuller-bodied carafe.

It’ll never quite reach the level of a really good barista, as they can react to how the coffee looks as they pour and subtly adjust for the perfect extraction. The Juni can’t do that. But it can produce coffee superior to almost all other automated home machines. Plus, a bunch of coffee shops use pour over machines now too.

Our Cosori Juni Recipe

This is the recipe we keep coming back to, using light roasted, washed processed Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans, manually ground using the 1Zpresso K-Ultra setting 8.0 to make 460 ml of coffee:

hand drawn lightbulb, yellow
  • 30g freshly ground coffee
  • Bloom – 5s agitation before 60ml 203°F at 3.0 ml/s in a spiral pattern. 5s agitation after, 30 second pause
  • 2nd pour – 240ml at 194°F at 3.5 ml/s spiral pattern. 30-second pause, no agitation
  • 3rd pour – 160ml at 189°F at 4.0 ml/s in circular pattern, 10 seconds draw down

For us, this works perfectly for our beans, so you can use it as a starting point for something similar. You can find it inside the app by searching for our username “HomeCoffeeExpert”. But have fun playing with the app and all the settings to find a style that works for you and the beans you’re using.

App User Experience

When so many of your coffee machine’s features are only accessible through an app, it needs to be good.

Cosori has made a wise choice in not building their own app but using another platform, VeSync. It’s all very sensibly laid out inside the app, with a dashboard including your recipes, presets, previous brews with feedback, new recipe building, and the “recipe plaza”.

For the basics, anyone who’s ever used any app before will be able to find their way around.

Barista Mode (where you create your own recipe from scratch) is very overwhelming if you’ve never made pour over before. But very fun for those of us who like to fall deep down rabbit holes.

The AI recipe generation is okay just now, but will hopefully get better as more people use it, giving it more feedback and data to pull from.

Once you’ve created and nailed some recipes in the app, you can also save up to 3 of them to the ‘Favorites’ button on the machine itself. So you don’t need your phone to brew coffee every time.

Overall the app is really good. It’s very slick to use; everything works as expected. The recipes that Cosori has uploaded into “recipe plaza” work really nicely as starting points, and I love that you can see user-generated recipes too. A real success.

Do you Need to Buy a Grinder for the Juni?

To really get the best from this machine, yes, a grinder will make all the difference.

If you’re spending $300 on a coffee machine, it might seem a bit weird to then say you should spend another $100-200 to get a grinder to go with it. But freshly ground coffee will always taste better than pre-ground.

And the Juni is not designed to replace your basic $100 drip coffee machine. It’s designed to replace the barista you buy pour over from or to save you the effort of learning and/or doing it yourself.

That means freshly ground, recently roasted high-quality beans are a necessity to really get the best results from the Cosori Juni.

The good news is that, unlike espresso, pour over has a more forgiving margin for error when it comes to grind size and consistency. But the quality of your grinder will make a bigger difference to your cup of coffee than almost anything else, so this isn’t the place to cut corners.

Realistically, you’re looking at a minimum of $100 for a decent manual pour over grinder or closer to $200 for an automatic grinder that’s good enough for quality pour over. As a starting point, we’d recommend the KINGrinder K6 or 1Zpresso K Ultra as great manual grinder options, or the Baratza Encore as an electric option. So, a total outlay of $400-500 for the Juni and grinder.

The other thing to consider is that the two main competitors, the Fellow Aiden and xBloom Studio, either also need a grinder (Fellow Aiden) or are double the price (xBloom). So even accounting for this extra outlay, you’re still saving money against the competition.

Design and Build Quality Review

The Looks

A couple of plastic skyscrapers with a helicopter pad on the front. This is probably the least charitable way to describe the Cosori Juni, but we live in a 53-storey building, so we kind of like skyscrapers.

It looks fine – it’s very minimal, modern, and the clear water tank is actually quite nice-looking. With the carafe sat under the dripper it looks like a space age drip machine, which I suppose is exactly what it is.

The little control panel with animations looks great and is nice to use. It does collect dust at a fair rate, but so does anything that’s shiny plastic.

Comparing it to other types of coffee makers (like espresso and drip machines), I would say it’s better-looking than many. If only because it’s quite interesting rather than just a big box sat on your counter. Whilst it’s brewing, it’s fun to watch the basket rotate, and the water spout come out.

The Build

The first thing we noticed was: this thing is tall! It stands at 15.2 inches high (38.6cm). You don’t need to get into the top of it for any reason; the water tank lifts off to be refilled. But it could be a struggle with some people’s overhead cabinets.

It is only 8.9 inches wide and 12.4 inches deep (22.6 by 31.5cm). This is a far bigger footprint than several drip machines, and certainly bigger than a manul pour over setup. But it’s hardly enormous by automatic coffee machine standards.

The big thing for coffee nerds, and comparing to it’s competition, is that the Cosori Juni is basically entirely made of plastic. This doesn’t really bother us, but I know it matters to a lot of people. If you want an automated coffee machine where the water never touches plastic after heating, you’ll really struggle these days.

Our machine came with the standard borosilicate glass carafe. You can pay an extra $50 if a stainless steel insulated carafe is more your style. We never batch brew with the intention of drinking it slowly over a few hours anyway, but worth considering if you do.

In terms of longevity, Cosori has a good reputation with other appliances, but this is their first coffee machine, so there’s no history to work from. This product is also brand new; we got one before the official launch, so we also can’t go on how other people have found it over time either. There are 3 movement components that, in theory, could break: the motor on the water dispenser arm, the motor that spins the dripper, and the motor that vibrates the dripper. That’s quite a few “fail points”. But you get a 2-year warranty, and until we experience or start to hear people complaining of motors burning out, we’re not too worried.

Cleaning and Maintenance Review

Cleaning is so simple it’s barely a task.

As everything is brewed externally, there isn’t a whole lot to worry about with the inside of the machine. It’s really just a case of binning the used filters and cleaning your dripper and carafe.

The cleaning routine for the Cosori Juni looks something like this:

Daily: Bin the filter and used grounds after each use. Rinse out the carafe. This takes us less than 1 minute each day.

Weekly: We give the outside a wipe at least once a week, as it gathers dust very easily.

Periodic: You’ll need to descale the Juni every 90 days or 60 brewing cycles, whichever comes first. The machine will remind you to do this, and it takes about 15 minutes all in – 10 for the descaling cycle (you need to buy descaling solution), and a few extra minutes to run a full carafe’s brew cycle (without coffee) to flush out any last solution from the water tank.

doodle of two boxing gloves

The Competition

At the moment, there aren’t many competitors in the automatic pour over machine space. But the ones that exist are big ones.

Fellow Aiden

More expensive and aimed more at those looking for an exceptional drip machine.

Fellow Aiden drip coffee maker beside the Fellow Opus grinder
  • ☕️ Coffee Quality: 9.5/10
  • 📋 Ease of Use: 8/10
  • 💸 Value for Money: 8/10
  • 🏆 Overall Rating: 9/10

Fellow calls the Aiden a “batch brewer” for a reason. It looks like a classic drip machine and aims to replace your classic drip machine but produce far better coffee. It certainly achieves this – the precise temperature control on brewing phases means you can get great results.

It’s very expensive for what it is:

For nearly $400, you’re getting a machine with a worse app and less precise brewing features than the Juni offers. Sure, it’s more compact, Fellow has a stellar reputation for build quality, and it looks better. But I don’t think you get any better coffee from the Aiden (and you need to factor in the extra cost of a grinder too).

If you get the Cosori with the insulated carafe, the Aiden is only $50 more. But there’s nothing the Aiden can do that the Cosori can’t, plus the Cosori app is far more user-friendly than the Fellow’s.

We’d take the Cosori for the savings, the better control over the brewing, and the better app.

xBloom Studio

xBloom Studio coffee maker in white
  • ☕️ Coffee Quality: 10/10
  • 📋 Ease of Use: 9/10
  • 💸 Value for Money: 6/10
  • 🏆 Overall Rating: 8.5/10

The xBloom Studio is $600, so it’s in a whole other price bracket than the Cosori. But it’s also infinitely customizable through an app and a built-in grinder, though xBloom wants you to use their coffee pods so it can read the barcode and adjust the recipe automatically.

Sounds great on paper, but the pods are expensive. The cheapest I’ve ever found is $1.50 per cup for a standard blend. You can get a really good blend for around half that price in 12oz bags of whole beans. You can still use your own beans; you just have to dose them before adding them to the machine, and then you can endlessly customize recipes in the app.

The xBloom Studio looks a lot nicer than the Cosori, for sure. It’s made from aluminum, and it’s very sleek and modern.

Even if you spend $200 on a grinder, it’s still cheaper to buy the Cosori than the xBloom. Maybe aesthetics and metal construction matter that much to you. We can’t justify the extra cost, as the coffee is no better, and owning a separate grinder gives you the flexibility to use any brewing method, while the xBloom grinds only for itself.

The xBloom is style over substance for us.

hand drawn lightbulb, yellow

The Verdict

It certainly isn’t perfect but the Cosori is really impressive and great value.

The biggest thing for us is the fact that the Cosori does what it claims to do. Automates pour over coffee to a standard where you can get cafe-quality pour over at home, consistent every time, with no need to learn to do it yourself. When we set out to write this Cosori Juni review, we really didn’t expect the complexity of flavor that it delivered in every cup of coffee.

We’d love it to be a little more compact, for the standard recipes to be a little better, and for the AI features to work better. You also need to take into account that you’ll have to buy a grinder to make the investment worth it.

But the app is simple to use – it works really well to brew high-quality coffee and will only get better as more people use it. So we’re excited to see how it goes over the next few months.

If you’re looking to bridge the gap between a good batch brew and a single-cup pour over, all at home at the touch of a button, then the Cosori Juni is a brilliant pour over machine.
